In Italy, Christmas is the most important festivity of the year and it is impossible not to love it. Across Italy, Christmas tends to be a family-centric holiday, a time to stay at home (eating until we burst!!) with loved ones, to play board games together and exchange presents. Christmas lights are switched on in every village and town and both on the streets and inside Italian homes and it is also the time when some Christmas markers start. Along with the fancy lights, wreaths and trees, nativity scenes (presepi) are displayed in many church and piazzas. Christmas Day and Christmas Eve are observed in different ways all over the country, depending on where you are. Christmas’s Eve is children’s favourite day because they all wait for Santa to come bringing gifts. Some Italians start celebrating with a nice dinner on the 24
th December while others prefer a light meal and wait for a huge Christmas lunch, the day after. However, the midnight Mass at the local church is a tradition from the North to the South. On Christmas morning, the family exchange presents and child find toys under the Christmas tree. Italians invite their family and friends for a large lunch that usually goes on all day. This is the perfect occasion to meet up with your family, sit around the table and enjoy a delicious and exquisite menu. In Italy there is not a sole popular dish, it varies fromr region to region. Every region has also its own dessert but we also have national traditional cakes, Pandoro and Panettone. After Christmas lunch, people use to play board games, card games or tombola. Younger people or families like going to the cinema in the evening.
