The plot of Pride and Prejudice is that of a romantic comedy: it concerns the fortunes of two young lovers: their trials, misunderstandings, reversals, triumphs and ends in happy marriages.
It is set at Longbourn, a small country village in Hertfordshire, where the Bennets live. It is an English family: Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters of marrying age, named Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia.
The quiet life of the village is upset by Mr. Byngleys and his family’s arrival. Mr Bingley is a rich man from London. After a series of balls and parties that bring the members of his little society together, Mr Bingley meets Jane, he falls in love with her and everybody says that they are a beautiful couple. Mr Bingley's friend, the aristocratic Fitzwilliam Darcy, begins to feel attracted to Elizabeth (also called Lizzy).
However, she dislikes him because of his distant behaviour and she considers him the responsible for the separation of Bingley and Jane.
When Mr Darcy declares his love, he cannot help showing contempt for her inferior sociale position; so Elisabeth is offended, furious and she refuses him harshly; so Elisabeth rejects him and accuses him of separating his sister and Bingley, and of ill-treating George Wickham, a young officer who was the son of Darcy's former steward.
On the day after, Darcy gives her a letter in which he explains his position and asks for pardon, he also reveals that Wickham is an unscrupolous adventurer. Meanwhile Wickham runs away to marry with Lydia. Mr Darcy, as soon as he knows about the fact, traces them, pays all Wickham’s debts and provides money for their marriage, enabling the Bennet family to preserve decorum.
Discovering what Mr Darcy did for her family, Elizabeth realises that she was mistaken about Darcy and falls in love with him. She accepts the renewed proposal, in spite of the opposition of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy’s arrongant aunt. Mr Bingley comes back and proposes to Jane, who accepts.
At the end of the novel, the two couples marries on the same day and Mrs. Bennet is happy. Bingley and Jane move to Derbyshire after a year and Elizabeth and Darcy live together in Pemberley with often visits from many of their friends.
