The Canterville Ghost: riassunto facile in inglese
The Canterville Ghost is set in England at the end of the 19th Century. The story begins when the American Minister Mr Otis and his family decide to move into Canterville Chase, despite warnings from Lord Canterville who tells them that a Ghost lives there as he is the ancient owner: Sir Simon de Canterville, who killed his wife Lady Eleanor de Canterville.
There are six people in the Otis family: Mr Hiram B. Otis, his wife Lucretia, the oldest son Washington, the twins and Virginia. They think America is much better than England; they don't believe in Ghosts but, shortly after they move in the house, none of them can deny the presence of Sir Simon de Canterville. When they arrive, Mrs Umney, the housekeeper, says them that the red stain on the library's floor is the blood of Lady Eleanor.
During one night, the ghost decides to scare them, Mr Otis listens to a strange noise in the corridor, where he meets the ghost and tells him that his chains are making a terrible noise and to put the Lubricator to stop them making noise.
On Sunday night, the ghost appears again because he wants to frighten the family with a suit of armour, but he is sad because it is too heavy for him. Humorously, none of these scare the Otis family in the end and Sir Simon feels increasingly helpless and humiliated, so he stops going out at night and stops putting the blood on the floor of the library.
The house becomes very quiet. During an encounter with Virginia, the ghost tells her that he has not splet in three hundred years and wants to do so; he also reveals her the tragic tale of his wife, Lady Eleanor de Canterville.
She takes him seriously and listens to him. The ghost convinces Virginia to help him: she must weep for him because he has no tears to be wept; she has to pray for him because he has no faith; and then she must bring him to the angel of death and beg for Death's mercy upon Sir Simon. She accepts and then she disappears with Sir Simone through the wainscoting and goes with him to the Garden of Death and bids the ghost farewell.
She reappears at midnight carrying a basket in her hands cointaing a lot of jewels. She also tells to her family that Sir Simon has passed on to the next world and no longer lives in the house.
The story ends with Virginia marrying Cecil Cheshire after they both come of age.
