Christmas is celebrated both in the UK and in Italy and, in both countries, it is the most important festivity of the year. During Christmas time, Christmas lights are switched on in the streets, Christmas markets and villages, Christmas pop-ups and ice rinks crowd towns and cities, shopping windows are bright and kaleidoscopic, while children are eager to receive the gifts from Father Christmas. Yet, even if there are many traditions in common, Christmas is celebrated in different ways in Italy and in the UK.

On Christmas Eve, in England, children waits for Santa’s arrival as in Italy, but the tradition of sending letters is different. While in Italy we send them to the North Pole (at least theoretically), English children burn them in the fireplace. According to the legend, Father Christmas is able to read the chimney smoke, so he can understand all the children’s requests. Furthermore, in Great Britain there is no a proper Christmas Eve dinner, but people like going to pubs or to midnight church services or singing Christmas carols outside.
On Christmas Day, both Italian and British families celebrate Christmas all together. In England, the traditional dishes are: roasted turkey with all the trimmings (i.e. carrots, peas, sausages and bacon), followed by Christmas pudding, a rich fruit pudding served with brandy sauce or brandy butter. Another popular tradition is the Christmas Cracker, a small cardboard tube covered in brightly coloured twist of paper that, when it is pulled by two people, pops and opens. Inside the paper, you can find a paper crown and a joke.
On the contrary, In Italy, there is no a sole popular dish, but it varies from region to region; however, among the most famous desserts, there are Pandoro and Panettone. After lunch, it’s time to play to board games or to go to the cinema.

Despite the different traditions, Christmas always creates a magic atmosphere everywhere: people gather together, have fun, eat a lot and exchange presents. Consumerism is now an important aspect of the festivity, but if you live Christmas as a moment of communion and harmony, it can easily be the most beautiful period of the year.
