COMPREHENSION AND INTERPRETATION

  1. Marsha Smith is a ‘food crisis responder’ or a ‘social eating advocate’: she takes surplus food from supermarkets and she cooks it for the people in need.

  2. FareShare is an organization that takes surplus food from supermarkets and redistributes it to charities and communities in the UK.

  3. SuperKitchen is a recipient of FareShare. It is a “social eating service” that offers home-cooked meals made from surplus food in Nottinghamshire.

  4. Nottingham has the highest number of workless households in the country.

  5. Marsha thinks that food banks are a good thing because they meet a need. However, food banks, like many organisation providing food to those in need, create a cycle of dependency and ignore the potential paying customers who can pay in order to feed the people economically vulnerable.

  7. Marsha is working with other local food groups, organisations and projects to unite them under a brand because it is important to create an interconnectivity between projects to combat issues such as security in the city.

  8. Masha is most enthusiastic about the social element of Super Kitchens, that offers the possibility of creating new space where eating together.

  10. Marsha is favouring the growth of urban resilience by stitching together a network of food growers, educators, organisations, distributors and suppliers and by providing spaces where individuals belonging to different backgrounds can meet and eat together.

PRODUCTION

  1. Marsha Smith states that she is a “social eating advocate” or a “food crisis responder” . In a society where on the one hand people live in poverty and in the other hand the rich waste food, it is essential to create a balance based on charity and altruism. And this is the aim of Marsha Smith. Moreover, her project aims at creating a socialisation between people who come from different social classes and who can meet and eat together. Marsha Smith’s business is a very good way of helping people because it tries to shake up the system for good by redistributing surplus food to charities and community projects in the UK, where there have been brutal cuts to the council. However, there is great abundance of food, so what people need is a better mechanism of distributing it.

There are many way of helping people in need. Marsha Smith’s organisation provides food, that is essential to survive. However, there are many other ways to help people in need. Charities and communities often provide clothes and books for the children who go to school. Many organisations also give the possibility to socialise with many sporting and cultural activities. Eating together is a good way of socialising and helping people but what is important in Marsha Smith’s project is the attempt to shaking up the system because there will always be surplus food in circulation and it is a shame to waste it. In order to fight this shame there should be more organisations that can oppose our industrialised system that is based on consumerism and on the division of society between a great number of poor and a limited number of privileged men.

PARTE 2

I have helped needy people in different occasions during my life, but there has been a particular experience that has changed my way of thinking and behaving. I worked for a charity that provided help for the poor and sick people about two years ago and it was a great and instructive experience for me. I helped the children with their homework in the afternoon and I sometimes kept old people company but I also had the opportunity to help children that had physic and psychic problems. During this period I met some people who were altruist and generous but I also realized that there weren’t many people involved in volunteering in my town. So I started to become interested in the problem and I tried to involve my friends and my family in the project of helping needy people. However, people is not always ready to help the others and even if there are many organizations, charities and communities that provide help for the poor and for the people who need other types of help, there are also many people who ignore the problems that afflict a large part of our society. So, what I have tried to do after my experience is to talk about the problems that we often ignore because we are too concentrated on our own lives. What I learnt from my experience is that only if you help the others you can give a reason to your life. Moreover, volunteering has been a good way of socialising because the children and the old men and women that I met two years ago became like a family for me and even if I can’t work for that charity any more now, I hope that I will be able to enjoy another association one day.
